4/27/09: Health care needs of women in prison Women’s Health Incarcerated women have more serious health problems than population outside of prison Poverty Limited access to preventative medical care Poor nutrition Chemical dependency Limited education Women in general suffer more physical and mental health problems than men, same pattern true for women in prison Complex reproductive systems, increase risk of female specific disorders Nonfatal chronic diseases are more prevalent among women Experience more psychological distress in general The 3 most important health care issues of women prisoners today: 1. Pregnancy and Gynecology a. Greater medical needs than men 2. Mental illness Estimated 25-60% of female prisoners require mental health services 3. HIV and infectious disease ~4% of female prisoners HIV+ Serious long term effects if STDs left untreated Hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis Pregnancy and Gynecology Interference with women’s abortion rights Women responsible for all costs, including security and transportation Many jails require women to obtain a court order before they will take her to a clinic Positive pregnancy outcomes related to incarceration Promotes healthy pregnancies and births Prenatal care Nutrition and shelter Limited access to drugs and alcohol Increase in birth weight of babies
