E4/7 Chris Graflage THEO 221-01 Essay Question 3 Jesus and the Pharisees Jesus and the Pharisees are alike in some ways, especially in terms of their teachings. Some examples are that they both believe in a soul and that there is a judgment. They believe that if a person lives a life unpleasing to God then they are forever punished, hell. Also, both base their teachings on the Torah to guide people to salvation. There are some distinct differences as well. The most notable is how Jesus lives more humbly, therefore, practicing what he teaches. On the other hand, the Pharisees live lavishly and do not hold themselves accountable to the same standards of the rest of the Jewish population. Jesus notices this and speaks out about this frequently. The best example is in Chapter 23 of Matthew. During this vicious confrontation with the Pharisees, Jesus ends up calling them hypocrites for not living their life according to how they say everyone else ought to live.
