E4/8 Chris Graflage THEO 221-01 Essay Question 11 Jesus’ Miracles These three stories are similar because they each have someone raising somebody from the dead unexplainably. All three men in the stories that perform the “miracles” do it out of pity for the family of the diseased person. There is no apparent difference between the biblical stories and that of Apollonius. The story in the Old Testament with Elijah raising a woman’s son from the dead, and the story in Luke with Jesus rising woman’s son from the dead are both very similar. Luke’s story is modeled after the story about Elijah in 1 Kings. He is showing that Jesus performs great acts just like the highly esteemed prophet Elijah. It is very difficult for a modern person to believe in miracles anymore. People in ancient times did not have a modern idea of “laws of nature.” Unexplainable things

Since the ancient world view is so different from ours, it is very difficult for us to understand what is exactly happening in miracle stories when interpreted using our modern ideas. Contemporary Christians do not have to believe that all the miracle stories told about Jesus are events that go against the laws of nature. Some miracle stories are just meant to be symbolic similar to the story in Luke 7:11-17. Contemporary Christians do have to believe the miracle stories are either symbolic or against the laws of nature. If they believe that the miracle stories are Jesus having advanced knowledge about the human body to raise somebody from the dead then that puts the validity of Jesus as the Son of God in question....
