E4/8 Chris Graflage THEO 221-01 Essay Question 17 Resurrection Stories All the stories imply that the tomb was empty. Also they all say or imply that this happened on the third day. This could have a symbolic meaning since in Hosea it says that though God would punish Israel for sin, God will heal and restore Israel soon on the third day. The Gospels say that women were the first witnesses to the Resurrection and have the stone being rolled back. This is unlikely that Christian made this up since women at the time were regarded as unreliable witnesses. Paul’s story in 1 Corinthians was the earliest. It does not mention the empty tomb, women witnesses, specific place or times of appearances. All the other details associated with the Resurrection are added later on by the gospels. Mark’s story has a young man (angel) in the tomb who says Jesus has been raised. The women tell no one. Jesus goes to Galilee. Luke has two men (angels) at the tomb.

Matthew has the story of the terrified guards. His story has Jesus being raised and going to Galilee. Jesus appears to women and tells them to tell the disciples. The guards report to their superiors and are told to say the disciples took the body. Jesus tells the disciples on a mountain in Galilee to baptize all nations. In John, Mary Magdalene finds the stone rolled back and tells Peter. Peter & John check the tomb. Mary returns to the tomb and see two angles and Jesus. Jesus tells her to tell the brothers. They do not believe her and so Jesus appears the all the disciples except Thomas that evening. Jesus appears to disciples a week later and Thomas finally believes....
