Phil 824 Prof. Meyer Fall 2009 Suggested Paper Topics Write a five page paper double spaced in 12 point Times font with one inch margins on one of the following topics, or design a topic of your own and submit it to me. Papers are due on December 12 by midnight in the digital dropbox for the course. Temple’s plagiarism policies apply to this assignment. 1. Rawls argues that a social contract theory of justice supports principles of equality and fairness in the organization of a well structured political order. Do you find his conception of a thought experiment, in which parties deliberate behind a veil of ignorance in the original position, adequate for assessing the relative justice of a nation? Why should Rawls’ view be considered liberal, and to what extent do you see it as distinct from neoliberal attitudes about domestic and foreign policy? How would a Rawlsian critique American governance during the period in which he writes? 2.
