SYLLABUS: BUS 315-004, Spring 2011 Room: BUSAD, G-102 Instructor: Kristan Skylar Powell Telephone: 956-7028 (e-mail is preferred) Office: A406 E-mail: skylarp@hotmail.com or kristans@hawaii.edu (Note: the hotmail account is preferred) Office hours: Wednesdays & Fridays 10:30 am -12:00 pm, or by appointment. I am flexible and you can always schedule an appointment outside of my office hours via e-mail. PREREQUISITE: PSY 100 or SOC 100 REQUIRED TEXT BOOK: Management: A Practical Introduction 2 nd edition (Note: This book can be rented at chegg.com; and in available in e-format ebooks.primus.com & coursesmart.com) ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: The purchase of two tests, the MBTI and the Strong Inventory, is also required at a cost of $25. The process is as follows: 1. Pay $25.00 (cash or check made out to "University of Hawaii") by mail or in person at the Testing Office, QLCSS 307, 2600 Campus Rd., Honolulu, HI. 96822. You can pay before or after taking the tests. 2. Go to http://online.cpp.com 3. Account ID: uhtesting 4. Account Password: bus315 5. User ID: (leave blank) 6. Click on MBTI, then "Take It". 7. Click on Strong Interest Inventory, then "Take It." Note: THIS IS A REQUIREMENT FOR ALL OF THE SECTIONS OF BUS 315. Your scores will be downloaded for scoring only after payment is received. Make certain that you take the correct form of the MBTI and of the Strong, as there are several to select from for each assessment. If you or your score reports are not present in class on the days of the test interpretations, in order to get your score reports, you will be required to make an appointment with a CSDC counselor for an individual session to go over your reports. Failure to take and pay for the instruments will result in the loss of 50 points from the final grade. These tests must be completed and the fees paid no later than February 16 th . LAULIMA: Over the course of the semester, PowerPoint slides, examples, readings, links, instructions, and study notes will be posted on Laulima. In addition, the course syllabus will be available through Laulima. 1

COURSE OBJECTIVES: This is a foundational course that serves as a basic introduction to management concepts, definitions, principles, issues, schools of thought, and functions. As such, this course seeks to impart clarity and understanding of the meaning, purpose, primary elements and characteristics of management -- including styles and objectives. This is an “Ethics” designated course and virtually all topics will involve ethical applications.
