Camille 1 Camille San Miguel Professor Dorland/ Miss Susan Kelly HONR 100 22 September 2010 Thoughts of Chastity The chastity of a woman is indeed something to be honored and valued . A woman’s chastity represents purity, patience, self-control and respect for her future husband . It is intended to be a means of protecting a woman before marriage . Conversely, chastity is also a choice that every woman must make for herself . However, the social and political culture of our world today has turned the chastity of a woman into a requirement and a means of systematically inflicting harm and dishonor to women . As exemplified by the Middle East, Africa and America, chastity has become an onus that is worth far more than the finest gold and a weapon far more traumatizing than death itself . The Middle East is a prime example of the cruelty inflicted upon women by the social custom of maintaining chastity . As explained by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl Wudin in the novel, Half the Sky , the chastity of a woman has become so highly valued in the Middle East that violence and murder are deemed suitable consequences of sexual impurity . In fact, the United Nations Population Fund has estimated that almost all of 5,000 honor killings (when a woman is killed for being unchaste or for falling in love with a man) each year take place in the Muslim community (Kristof, 82) .

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
