Dmitri Mendeleev -developed the first periodic table. Periodic law- when elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic # and physical and chemical properties show a periodic pattern. Moseley -developed the concept of atomic #. Metals -have luster and shine, good conductors of heat and electricity, solids at room temp, malleable, ductile. Nonmetals - do not have metallic luster, poor conductors of heat and electricity, not malleable or ductile, most are gases at room temp. bromine is liquid, vary in physical prop. . Valence electrons - outermost electrons responsible for an atom’s chemical behavior. . Air is a mixture of several gases; medium through which energy and matter is transported. Physical props of gas- gases in air are colorless have mass, easy to compress, fill containers completely, move by diffusion, exert pressure. Behaviors of gas - gases can be compressed by exerting pressure on them, will occupy the volume available to them. Gas particles -are in constant rapid, random motion. If there is a strong pressure, there is a small volume. Factors that affect gases - temperature (in K), Pressure(in KPa, atm, or torr), and volume (L or mL 1L=1000mL). amount is measure in moles barometer -used to measure the pressure of gases. Stp-
