Heart Failure Heart failure represents a condition where the heart is unable to pump blood sufficiently. This results in backup of blood in the venous system. If the left heart is failing, blood will back up in the pulmonary veins and leak out into the lungs. Remember, H.F. reported increasing shortness of breath. If the right heart is failing, blood will back up in the superior vena cava, the inferior vena cava, and perhaps even further.
