Heesang Park Zheng Huili Chinese 272 Vernacular and Supernatural Tales, The Pearl Shirt Reencountered The Pearl Shirt Reencountered is a work of vernacular stories that represent culture of a society that it is based on. Vernacular stories reflect social backgrounds of current social dilemma and habits. The Pearl Shirt Reencountered is very interesting due to the fact that even with the limit of vernacular stories in its depth, The Pearl Shirt Reencountered contains intense and dynamic plot and characterizations. Although plot has limited length and settings and there is limited number of characters, there are also some unique factors that can only be experienced in these vernacular stories. The Pearl Shirt Reencountered is particularly excellent in various ways: They are contingency, morality, musicality, and intervention of the author. Unlike short stories that are fluent in today’s literature that are overly childish and obvious, The Pearl Shirt Reencountered gives fresh image about vernacular stories during the old times of China and helps to understand Chinese culture. About the contingency of The Pearl Shirt Reencountered , the story is filled with spontaneous coincidences. Coincidences usually cause stories to lack in their quality of fluency. However, the theme of most vernacular story explains abundance in coincidences in the work.
