Euthanasia (active): occurs when doctors take direct actions in ending a person’s life, usually by lethal injections. Euthanasia (passive): doctors omit certain actions that could save a life or extend a dying person’s life, (antibiotic treatment, CPR) Physician-assisted suicide: doctors give patients the means to end their own lives. Intentional decision to die Right to die: The attitude that people have the right to die if they so choose. Duty to die: attitude that people who are old or terminally ill have a duty to die, to alleviate the costs and burdens of themselves on society. Ordinary vs. extraordinary means ( an aggressive medical procedure performed on a dangerously ill patient that in itself may endanger the patient but which has the possibility of being successful.) Doctrine of double-effect: The doctrine: One can carry out an act which one foresees will bring about death, as long as: (a) the act itself is not intrinsically wrong (b) the good effect is sufficiently desirable to compensate for the bad effect (c) the good effect (pain relief) is produced directly by the action and not by the bad effect (death) Not Dead Yet: is a national disability rights group which opposes the legalization of assisted suicide and euthanasia, because of the lethal danger to this nation's largest minority group, people with disabilities.
