3 Example • Hypothesize • The population of students in PSY 207 has a mean IQ of 100 • μ = 100 • Sample • We randomly select 10 students and test their IQs • M = 120 Example • Determine the probability of obtaining a sample with M = 120 from a population with μ = 100 • If sample with M = 120 is probable, accept hypothesis • If sample with M = 120 is not probable, reject hypothesis Inferential Statistics • Inferential statistics use probabilities to test hypotheses about populations based on samples Sampling Distribution 7.1 Inferential Statistics 7.2 Sampling Distributions • We now know how to use the standard normal curve to determine probabilities for choosing samples of size 1 • If the population mean and standard deviation are known -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 • We now know how to use the standard normal curve to determine probabilities for choosing samples of size 1 • If the population mean and standard deviation are known • But we almost never will choose samples of size 1
