Denielle Barcelona ANTHRO 102A December 10, 2010 Great African Civilizations : In the article “Great African Civilizations,” author Kathy Henry talks about how the African civilizations were not at all like most Europeans and Westerners have thought of. She starts off by saying that there are many misconceptions about Africans, and that many people believe that they have are primitive with no culture and no established societies. She tries to dispel this wrong assumption through her discussion of Meroe, Ghana, and Swahili. In talking about Meroe, she goes as far as to say that “Egypt was a carbon copy of Meroe.” 1 She says that archaeological evidence suggests that Meroe was older than the Egyptian civilizations. Furthermore, she talks about how Meroe had a written language, ruling queens, and massive iron production (evidence of economics), which prove that it is a complex society.
