Personal Statement 1 Personal Statement The ethnic group I identify with is African American. Growing up as an African American female I was taught you treat others as you want to be treated. I was taught that to get respect you have to first give respect. I was also taught that you have to respect yourself before others will. My parents never allowed me to wear makeup, short or tight clothes. I was told that a man will respect you more if you leave something for their imagination. To this day I do not wear clothes that show a lot of my body. My personal behavior is very respectful. I try to avoid conflicts that will cause me to step out of character. I try to talk my problem out before they lead to conflicts, if that does not work I will walk away. My parents have always told me that fighting will only lead to more problems. I have only had one fight in my life and that was when I was in the 5 th grade. I remember trying to talk the situation out with the person and before I knew it she hit me in my face with her fist.
