4/20/11 Pre-laboratory 10: Electrochemistry Introduction: This laboratory involves the study and examination of electrochemical cells and electrochemical processes. A difference between voltaic and electrolytic cell is learned and electrolysis is performed. We will also compare a series of measured voltaic to reference values. Materials: Copper strips and Zinc metal 9V battery Analytical balance Beakers Chemical solutions Well plate LabPro Box Filter paper Electrode Methods/Procedures: 1. Electrolysis -Obtain a mass of two copper strips (within 0.1 mg). -Place them at opposite sides of a 50 mL beaker. Turn their ends on the top of the beaker and add 30 mL of 1M CuSO4 solution. -Connect the copper strips to the electrical leads. Once they’re (connections) are secure, connect the post, one at a time, to the voltage source. -Record which cable was connected to the negative post and which was connected to the positive post. -Let the electrolysis proceed for 15 minutes and then remove the connections from the voltage
