Colorado Underfoot Name ___________________ Inquiry #3 : The Rock Cycle LEARNING TARGET: I can use physical properties to identify rocks and infer about the past history of the earth. I can identify and describe properties of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Now that we have looked at how plate tectonics shapes the surface of the earth, we will now connect this knowledge to how the rock cycle shapes the surface of the earth. As you know, if you look around on the surface of the earth you will notice lots of rocks. A rock is a mixture of minerals, volcanic glass, organic matter, or other materials. Rocks can be divided into three different categories: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock. What makes these rocks different? How are these rocks all related? How do rocks change over time? What might these changes tell us about the past, present, and future of the geology of Fort Collins? As you do these activities keep in mind how the rock cycle (as a process on earth) shapes the surface of the earth. OBJECTIVE: To observe the rock cycle through a series of simulation activities Determine how igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks are related. QUESTION How are all of the different types of rocks related? PREDICTION (HYPOTHESIS) MATERIALS: Crayons Pennies Aluminum foil paper towel aluminum pie tin 3 plastic cups (one with ice water, one with warm water, and one empty), ice alcohol burner
