Jasmin Peters April 29, 2010 Exam 3 1. My favorite song from the Civil Rights movie: “Let Freedom Sing” was Aretha Franklin’s song entitled “Respect.” The Civil Rights movement inspired the music because it gave people something to sing about. Music that was produced during that time served as purpose other than to entertain people. The music was produced to also inspire and elicit a response from its listeners. All of this was accomplished by writing lyrics that pertained to events that were happening or to push the people to encourage and fight for change. Freedom music has become international through artists of all genres coming together for foundations such as “We Are the World” and singing to keep up hope. 2. When Cone says that it isn’t possible to understand the cross without the lynching tree he is saying that you cannot disconnect the two.
