Over the course of the 20th century, the automobile quickly developed from an expensive toy for wealthy people into the reality standard for passenger transport in almost every developed country. The automobile was handmade making them very expensive. It completely replaced all other means of transportation in both efficiency and usefulness. Up until the automobile, horses were the sole means of transportation in the cities. The first automobile to be produced in quantity was the 1901 Curved Dash Oldsmobile, which was built in the United States by Ransom E. Olds. Henry Ford built his first gasoline-powered car in 1896. He is credited with modern automobile mass production, and the start of the assembly line. The development of the automobile introduced rapid changes in employment patterns, social interactions, and the distribution of goods. Over the years, the actual use of the automobile has changed. Now, many people buy a car because of its exterior, not the interior. Manufacturers no longer design cars for longevity; but for appearance because they realize that’s what attracts the customers.
