Peters 1 Jasmin Peters December 14, 2010 English 0802 Section 007 YES WE CAN! 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! The President elect is BARACK OBAMA! The slogan for his campaign: “Change We Need!” Sounds like a strategic move from a politician who plans on fixing the many problems the United States is facing today. Unbeknownst to many, that slogan means so much more. This election has moved the nation in a way that no other election has. Besides the fact that the campaign has brought in monetary contributions that no other election can compete with; has more voters than any other election held, and more influence on the young, this election contained a candidate who was African- American. There have been many attempts by African- American in the presidential race but none have gotten past the primaries. Here we have an African- Americans who actually has a chance to win and is moving the

Peters 2 country in ways like never seen before. He ran a great campaign and brought out voters of all races, ages, and economic levels. There is no doubt that this was by far the most iconic winner in the history of American politics. Barack Obama was born Aug. 4, 1961 making him the first African American president of the United States (A &E). Although many believed that Obama would win the African American voters and prominent African American supports, that was not the case. He had to prove himself to everyone, not just the white community. One of Obama’s strongest supporters was Oprah Winfrey. She donated millions of dollars to his campaign and brought out numerous amounts of volunteers to Obama’s campaign. According to an LA Times Article, “Oprah announced that not only was she supporting Obama, but she would campaign with him and we'd see if her political recommendation carried as much weight as her book recommendations.(Malcolm)” She used her top ranking show and strong influence over women to help with Obama’s campaign. Both are from the same town and attended the same church at some point in time. Oprah was one of Obama’s strongest supporters and helped make this the most iconic election yet. She also helped expose Obama’s iconic potential. She
