Lesson 1-1 Writing Expressions and Equations Objective: To translate words into algebraic expressions and equations. Vocabulary: Algebraic expression Contains at least one variable and at least one mathematical  operation. Variable An unknown number, its value varies. Numerical expression Contains only numbers and mathematical operations. Factors The quantities being multiplied in an expression involving  multiplication. Product The result in an expression involving multiplication. Equation A sentence that contains an equal sign (=).  An equation may contain  numbers, variables, or algebraic expressions. If a candy bar costs 45 cents. The letter n is called a  variable .  It stands for an  unknown number.  Its value  varies . 45 x n is an  algebraic expression .
