Reconstruction and the West The South Some historians argue that Radical Reconstruction was not radical enough. After studying the events of the late 19th century, defend whether or not you agree with this position. What are the long-term implications? Radical Reconstruction Eric Foner quotes W.E.B. DuBois in calling Reconstruction a " splendid failure." Unfortunately this was very true, the Radical Reconstruction was supposed to bring the South back to the Union, however all it did was cause more conflicts. President Johnson was thrust into his rule as leader of the nation due to the fact Lincoln was murdered by John Wilkes Booth. Johnson was not as equip in his knowledge, he was also a very racist President. The Radical Republicans and Johnson were always as odds. The Radical Republicans felt Johnson should have been harsher toward the Confederate States, instead of pardoning them in masses ( OpenStax College, 2014). The south felt that the northerners were still trying to dictate their way of life. They were not ready to except blacks as equals, this led to allot of opposition and developments of white supremacy groups like the Ku Klaus Klan which terrorist freed blacks and those whites that sympathized with them. Any laws that Congress tried to pass was always veto by President Johnson. This just added to the conflicts between Congress and Johnson ( ushistory.org, 2016 ). Johnsons consent conflicts with Congress would ultimately lead to his impeachment, instead of reconstructing the south; overall things never got any better. African Americans were not as knowledgeable in the work force; they only knew one way of life that of a plantation Reconstruction and the West 2
