Sarah Rhein CFA 111 A March 3 rd, 2011 Revolutionist Erik Erikson Erik Homburger Erikson was one of the most influential developmental psychologists of the 20th century. How we think about the development of humans was revolutionized by the thinking of this man. Erik Erikson was a different kind of thinker at an early age. He was born in 1902 to a Jewish mother and a Danish father who abandoned them right before Erik’s birth. Erik Erikson became very interested in identity at a very young age because of his own troubling childhood. When he was in school, instead of studying science courses like most psychologists of the time, Erikson preferred to study art and languages. Formal schooling was not favored by Erik Erikson because he was often teased. At home, Erikson was also viewed as an outcast (Sharkey, 1997 & Cherry, 2011). His rough experiences during childhood and early-adult life were probably the inspiration for his life work on psychosocial development and contributed to the way he thought about psychology and life in general. Erikson stumbled on this subject matter by chance as he was traveling Europe as an artist to avoid formal schooling. Erikson took a teaching job in Vienna at a school that was run by Dorothy Burlingham who was a psychoanalyst and opened the door to many
