THEORETICAL ISSUES 2 What are the basic questions in child development - Basic theoretical/ philosophical assumptions A. Are children active or passive in their development? a. Early (really early) conceptions i. Passive -John Locke -children are blank slates -children are void of information and influence (tabula rasa) -empty vessel waiting to be filled 1. Society determines development ii. Active -Rousseau (known for the social contractive -children are innately good, skilled, and talented and their life is to shape, bring out and develop these already great things within a person 1. Society interferes with positive development -obstacles in the way of positive development b. Theoretical models i. Passive -Mechanistic Model -people act in response to external environmental input -we react to our surroundings and the way we react is the way we will develop 1.
