ISB 202 10-30-08 Protistas o Blooming algae- cause the famous “red tides” found along many coastal areas. 1. Fish are killed by 1000s Lack of oxygen Clogged gills Toxin secreted by the algae (nerve poison) 2. Toxins from algae can be lethal to humans! Oysters, clams, mussels, (shellfish) feast on algae o Dead amoebas (protistas) over millions of years- sank to the ocean bottom and were washed up on shore. o 70% of all photosynthesis on Earth occurs in oceans by phytoplankton o Malaria is a huge problem world wide- 500 million people infected each year, 2.7 million die/year Mosquitoes carry malaria but don’t cause it What is the genus of protistas causes malaria? _____ o Potatoes are almost perfect, nutritionally – you can live quite well eating just potatoes They lack sufficient vitamin A But including milk, eggs, or “greens” makes it balanced Cancer Issues o Apoptosis- when cells self-destruct. A P53 is released and slices up protein & DNA killing the cell!
