Throughout the world – 333 million new cases of curable sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs) occur each year among adults
o
The rates of STDs are 50-100 times higher in the US than in other
developed nations (1 in % by age 21)

15.3 million new cases of STDs are reported in the US each year (5% of
the total production)
o
3 million occur in persons aged 13 to 19 years. 63% are under 25 years old!

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) – cause: human
immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Nongonococcal urethritis- cause: mycoplasma, symptoms: painful
urination, mucus, discharge
o
Chlamydia- second most common STD in US- the most common among
people your age- treatment: antibiotics
