ISB 202 11-4-08 STDs o Throughout the world – 333 million new cases of curable sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) occur each year among adults o The rates of STDs are 50-100 times higher in the US than in other developed nations (1 in % by age 21) o 15.3 million new cases of STDs are reported in the US each year (5% of the total production) o 3 million occur in persons aged 13 to 19 years. 63% are under 25 years old! o Every sexual liaison is more than just fluid dynamics it’s also sharing of microorganisms o One “experienced” person, can infect another “naïve” person with many of his/her micro-flora in ____ o Herpes Simplex- Virus- infects all vertebrates. Seven species infect humans. o Syphilis- enters body through tears in epidermis. o Syphilis symptoms: canker sore, rash, vital organ damage- treatment: antibiotics- complications: death, fetal transmission o Gonorrhea- treatment: antibiotics- symptoms: women may have none, men have painful urination. o AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) – cause: human immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) o Nongonococcal urethritis- cause: mycoplasma, symptoms: painful urination, mucus, discharge o Chlamydia- second most common STD in US- the most common among people your age- treatment: antibiotics
