ISB 202 11-11-08 Plantae o Water needs: some love water-“hydrophytes” o Some require little water-“xerophytes” o They fall between hydrophytes and xerophytes they are mesophytes (“meso” means middle) o Kinds of storage tissues Seeds, leaves and roots are the biggies (But stems are important, too. E.g., potatoes are modified stems) o Life cycles of plants Annual- seed to seed in one year (e.g., maize) Biennial- takes two years; vegetative first year and sees the second (e.g., beets, carrots, cabbage Perennial- lives more than two years. May reproduce by sees and/or vegetatively o Growth habit- upright, climbing, prostrate, etc. (Why do most crops have upright growth habit?) o Cold tolerance- most plants don’t grow well in cold temperatures. But, most also shut down when it’s too hot!-Why can many animals (including people) tolerate a wider range of temperature?- animals grow hair to adapt to temperature but plants can’t do that o Photoperiod response (triggering of flowering)
