On man’s treatment of nature Spiegel: Mr. Jonas, thirteen years ago, you published your book The Principle of Responsibility . In this work, you appeal to humanity to become aware of its responsibility to nature, which is threatened by technology and industry. Thirteen years later: Has anything improved in man’s dealings with nature? Jonas: In the actual treatment, nothing, [but] something in people’s consciousness has changed nevertheless: in 1979, when my book was published, the call for man’s responsibility to nature was not yet heard and discussed as often as today. Spiegel: And what has changed in the actual situation? Jonas: The actual situation has only been able to grow worse all in all. Until now, nothing has happened to change the course of things, and because this course is cumulatively rife with catastrophe, we have today simply come a decade closer to a bad end as [we were] back then.
