Formally defined, a core competency is a firm’s long run, strategic ability to build a dominant set of technologies and/or skills that enable the firm to adapt to quickly changing marketplace. Another view is core competencies are the collective learning in the organization, especially how to coordinate diverse production skills and integrate multiple streams of technologies. Three tests for a core competency: ± The competency must provide access to a wide variety of products ± Customers must value the differentiation brought about by the competency ± The competency must be difficult to imitate
