They suggest that Singapore firms need to be even more competitive and quality conscious, but also hold out more opportunities for the expansion of Singapore corporations. At the management level, the kind of linear extrapolation advocated by the traditional principles of scientific management thought are likely to be insufficient to enable the new managers in the industry to cope with these changes. Problematic contexts will thus need to be increasingly defined in other terms. It is not easy for some managers to do this, mainly because in the Singapore situation most leaders of the industry have come from technology- oriented backgrounds which make them more at home in situations described in machine terms.
