It also manufactures label application machines for other companies. Thornton was set up in the early nineteenth century and, although none of the Thornton family is still connected with the firm, its ethos is still that of a family business. The present managing director is concerned that every employee should feel that he or she is a full member of the company, have pride in his or her work and in a quality product, and should be willing to work hard in the company. This is far from the current reality of the situation, however, as indeed the managing director realises.
