Adopting a systems approach involves discovering this and also going on to realise that every world view is terribly restricted. Churchman's development of these ideas has clearly taken an ethical route, dealing with issues arising for future generations and opposition to the ideas from religion, aesthetics and politics. This left the way open for someone sagacious enough to explore the notion of subjectivity in a more pragmatic way, by asking questions about the different ways people perceive problem situations, how these can be represented and how learning can be generated from this. Focusing on this line of development, however, ran the risk of sidestepping potent ethical and political issues. As we shall see in the critique of SSM later in this chapter, this is precisely the reason why SSM helps in pluralist but not in coercive contexts. Werner
