critiqu e The methodologies chosen for Chapters 49 are an ordered selection from available systems-based "problem solving" approaches. This reflects our commitment to systems ideas as the most adequate means of managing "messes". We have written the book without putting references in the text. The aim is to prevent the flow of ideas and argument from being interrupted. The sources for particular chapters are detailed in further reading sections at the end of each chapter. It is necessary for us to acknowledge here, however, the contributions of the ideas of G. Morgan to Chapter 1 and of P. Keys to Chapter 2.
