Introduction The report on ‘Importance of Communication in Leadership’ is the topic of my dissertation that has been carried out as a part of my successful completion of Masters Degree. This topic is the root of my personal interest, where I wish to do in the future, pursue a wider depth of investigation to further my knowledge within the banking sector in Bangladesh The report includes definitions, styles and theories of leadership as well as the importance of communication. Primary research was also conducted in order to attain first hand qualitative information. Importance of Communication in Leadership 2. Research Aim The aim of my research was to evaluate the recent research on leadership and to find any correlation between the importance of communication with regards to leadership. Importance of Communication in Leadership 3. Methodology In order to review and understand the existing literature on leadership and communication I went through a number of text books and journals in particular by Adair, Bass, Avolio, Covey, Grint, Belbin, Burns, Hooper, Lewin, and Harvard Business Review. A range of online websites were accessed where emphasis was given on Institute of Leadership and Management, Advanced Institute of Management, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, The practice of Leadership, and Centre for Leadership Studies. For my primary research, I sampled two of the senior managers of Bedfordshire College. I did a semi structured interview with my purposive sampling of two managers namely Mr. Syed Murthuza, the Business Head, and Mr. Arman Uddin, the Principal. The interviews were held face to face on the 6 th of September, 2010 in their respective offices. Questions were asked (Appendix 2) and notes were taken during the interviews. Questions were given to Mr. Syed before hand but Mr. Arman preferred to address the questions during the interview. University of Hertfordshire 3
