Xenorhabdus nematophila Chad Davis Section 2 Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus are both virulent, fatal pathogens to insects(1). These bacteria have some similarities in that they are characterized by their mutualistic relationship with their nematode hosts ( Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae ), specifically for Xenorhabdus nematophila hosts, Steinernema carpocapsae (1). X. nematophila , and 14 other strains with two secondary phenotypic strains (total of 17) were tested for proteolytic activity(1). X. nematophila was the only one scrutinized by a "biochemical detection method of protease activities, zymography" (1). An interesting fact of these insect pathogens is, their entire life cycle. X. nematophila live inside a specific region in the nematodes intestinal lumen (2). The way this nematode- X. nematophila symbiotic relationship works is, it begins with the nematode entering into an insect and into the hemolymph (1,2). The nematode continues to release X. nematophila from its specific region into the insects hemolymph(1,2). X. nematophila begin to divide in the nutrient rich environment(1,2,3). The nematodes ( S. carpocapsae ) go through several cycles of sexual reproduction, eating the dead insect, and X. nematophilia alter genetic necessity to produce antibiotics to kill its bacterial competition as well as exoenzymes to break down nutrients in the dead insect(4). After several reproductive cycles of the nematodes, X. nematophila "re- associate" (enter back into) with the nematodes.
