English 96 Chihhao Chang Final Draft Official Language in America English is the most widely known language in America. But many people residing in America come from countries and ethnic groups which speak different languages. In his article “Why the U.S. Needs an Official Language” Mauro E. Mujica, the CEO of the nation’s oldest and largest citizens’ action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language, states almost everything in the world is dominated by English. Mujica said, “English is the language of business, higher education, diplomacy, aviation, the Internet, science, popular music, entertainment, and international travel. All signs point to its continued acceptance across the planet” (581). Mujica claims that English is the most commonly used language in the United States, and making it the official language would help and benefit immigrants in their education, business, social networks, and their future. I agree with Mujica because it is impossible to escape from the English. In other words, English is a powerful tool that helps people succeed and lead a good life. Therefore, English should be the official language in the United States because people need a strong central language to unite, and it will help immigrants connect and succeed in America. The biggest and most obvious problem with speaking many different languages in United States is miscommunication, which can create tension between citizens. For example, when I go to my college library and ask for help finding information, some of the library aides speak broken English that is difficult to understand. The hired library aides have trouble understanding what I am trying to find, and I have trouble understanding them when they try to help me out. It is a very frustrating situation for both the aides and me. It happens to people, who are immigrants, when they go to the government service. People could not get what they want because they could not find translators to help them. As a result, they might think that the service 1
