What would you change? One example of a document that illustrates precedent in the Declaration of Independence is the Magna Carta. Englishmen left their homeland to establish colonies in the New World, they brought charters with them guaranteeing that they and their heirs would have and enjoy all the liberties and immunities of free and natural subjects. They were fighting not for new freedoms but the freedom to preserve liberties that dated to the 13 th century.

“The English Common Law is a document that has the laws of Englishmen. These laws are basic restrictions that someone would follow. The Rights of Englishmen appear similar to the English Common laws, but describe rights an Englishmen should have. Many ideas appear in our own Constitution today.”
