How a Microwave Oven Functions Microwave ovens have become appliances which are crucial to the lives of many Americans. They are used to warm, reheat, and even cook many meals consumed across the United States. It seems that one cannot pick up a package of frozen food without immediately finding directions on how to cook it using the microwave oven. Much more complicated than the device’s simple instructions are the mechanical and chemical concepts behind it. The mechanical component of a microwave oven is essentially a magnetron. This device is located inside the microwave, as is shown in the picture to the right from Explain That Stuff, and it serves the purpose of generating the microwaves which the appliance is named after. These microwaves are only 12 centimeters long, much shorter in length and frequency than radiowaves. The microwaves are directed into the food compartment using a waveguide, which is essentially a metal tunnel which has a slowly spinning blade at the end to direct the microwaves all around the cooking area.
