Basic Organization of the Central Nervous System Characteristics of communication in the nervous system: 1. Rapid control of sensory/motor activities (perception, emotion) 2. Receives information through sensory systems and process it to determine the effector response 3. Basic unit of information processing is action potential (AP) in the entire nervous system all or nothing response, maximum frequency 500-1000 Hz 100 mV peak to peak amplitude of action potential, 2 ms duration 60 to 80 mV (negative) resting nervous information contained in frequency, not amplitude; firing pattern 4. Intercellular communication occurs mainly at the specialized sites: chemical synapses, electrical synapses, gap (tight) functions Three major CNS systems: Sensory system (afferent, ascending system): deliver information from receptors to CNS
