Special Problems for ME 200 - Spring 2011 Problems Due on January 14, 2011 SP1: A small experimental rocket which has a mass of 70 kg is accelerated at a rate of 6 m/s 2 . Determine the total force required for the following two cases (a) the rocket is moving horizontally and (b) the rocket is moving vertically upwards. Neglect any frictional effects and assume that the local gravitational constant is 9.45 m/s 2 . Determine the answer in both SI units (Newtons) and English units (lbf).

Unformatted text preview: SP2: A 9 m 3 tank has two sections separated by a membrane, both of which contain nitrogen gas. The nitrogen in section A has a initial density of 1.667 kg/m 3 and the gas in section B has a mass of 6 kg. The membrane then breaks and the final overall density is found to be 1.778 kg/m 3 . Determine the initial density of the gas that existed in section B (kg/m 3 )....
