Mechanical Contact Interactions This week in lab and during next week’s lecture we will finish up our work in Chapter 2 developing force-based ways of explaining what happens when objects interact mechanically. For example, explain why a cart begins to move when pushed? We can do this in two ways now! Here are two good explanatory narratives. You should be gaining confidence in using the ideas we’ve developed and agreed upon during lab activities to write your own energy- and force-based narratives!
Recall that we developed energy-based explanations to a point where we could be quantitative about them. For example, we considered gas in a cylinder with a piston that interacted with a hot plate and that expanded. HC/IR Interaction Contact Interaction Heat Flow Gas Mechanical Energy Thermal Energy Increases Let’s complete the I/O diagram describing this situation. Note that we are able to use energy ideas to explain phenomena involving more than mechanical contact interactions.
