Daniel Valdez My Position on Free Will I would consider myself to be some variety of soft determinist. I believe that we have certain actions which are freer and actions which are less free than others. I believe that the degree of freedom of an act corresponds with the degree of desire to perform an act. For example, suppose I had not drunk any water in three days and was very thirsty. Over the three days of thirst, my desire to consume water would increase continually. Thus, my freedom to avoid drinking water would shrink in proportion to my thirst. Eventually, I would have almost no choice at all but to obtain whatever water I have access to. A more extreme and less mundane example would be a person who is addicted to hard drugs. Many such addicts are known to commit robberies, burglaries and other felonies to obtain their drug. The popular song “Pocket Full of Stones” even describes crack cocaine addicts, including “pregnant fiends,” as allowing themselves to be sexually abused and degraded by their drug
