2/16/2011 2 APA style The APA (American Psychological Association) style is a formatting style in scholarly writing. It consists of rules or guidelines to ensure clear and consistent presentation of written material. It seeks a uniform use of such elements as: Punctuation and abbreviations. Construction of tables, figures, etc. Selection of headings. Citation of references. Presentation of statistics. 3 Why APA style? (1) Scholarly communication : Learn to “speak the right language” in an academic setting. In our fields (SRT&H), we write our work in the APA style! Academic training and learning: This is a formal training and learning process to help you become a good communicator in scholarly writing. 4

4 Referencing This refers to the part where you “reference” the literature or sources you have cited or quoted in your research papers. It’s the section usually called “References,” “Bibliography,” “Literature cited,” or “Work cited .” These cited items are listed in alphabetical order of their first few words (often the last name of the first author of each item). 7
