Dustin Paluch Professor Ringer- Essay 4 WRI 102-25 2 May 2010 For the Benefit of Humanity When observing a group of children at play or adults at a meeting it is not difficult to identify the leader. However, coming up with a concise definition to the word leader is often a difficult task. Definitions of a leader include patience, understanding, enthusiasm, charisma, good organizational and listening skills, as well as strength, both mentally and physically (Vick 1). In each of the three films, Schindler’s List , Life is Beautiful , and Defiance , the leader’s each possess many, if not all of these characteristics. But these characteristics alone is not what allows Schindler, Guido, and the Bielski brothers to capture the attention of thousands of Jews and lead them through turbulent times. Without Oskar Schindler and the Bielski brothers, thousands of lives would have been lost, and without Guido’s game in Life is Beautiful , there would be no hope in his wife Dora or his son, Joshua. Leaders do not always have all the answers, but they have the natural ability to influence. This characteristic, needed to be an effective leader, comes from within and is put to good use through each of the characters in the three films. As stated by H. Ross Perot, “People cannot be managed, inventories can be managed, but people must be led” (Vick 1). Millions of Jews were killed for years during the Holocaust because of ignorance and hatred. Millions of Jews also survived each year because of one person, or a group of persons rising up to take the lead and take a stand for the benefit of someone else’s life. Through the actions of one person, audiences can see how the lives of Jews are changed through gratitude, Paluch 1

encouragement, and with the help of a support system through the characters in Schindler’s List , Defiance , and Life is Beautiful . Stories about a person who saved the life of someone are known worldwide. From the people who fought back on flight United 93 so that no more innocent people would be murdered by terrorists on September 11, 2001 to soldiers in Iraq who fight every day to save countless lives of local Iraqies. One reason these stories are so prevalent to many Americans is because numerous movies were made based on the events from each situation. One thing that makes these events so memorable are the people who take a stand and by doing so they bring positive change to the world. Each of the three listed movies, Schindler’s List , Defiance , and Life is Beautiful also show how one person’s stance can create positive change in what they are fighting for. In Schindler’s List , approximately 1,300 Jews owe their life to Oskar Schindler who gave up his entire fortune and any chance of having a successful future in order to save the lives of those who are unfortunate. Though Schindler originally wanted Jews because they were cheaper to pay wages for than the Poles as time went by, his inner emotions began to replace the greed
