Dustin Paluch Professor Ringer WRI 102-25 17 February 2010 Two is Better Than One “I think this is the beginning of beautiful friendship” (Harmetz, 255). Though this quote is used out of context, it can best describe to viewers Rick and Sam at the beginning of Casablanca . Viewers see Rick and Sam’s friendship progress as the film goes on. Through World War II, invasions of their original homeland, to heart break, Rick and Sam stay together through thick and thin. Casablanca shows the growing bond between two best friends in the midst of World War II through a series of events including loyalty, generosity, and selflessness. The characters Sam and Rick have a profound loyalty for one another - each of them helps the other through tremendous amounts of physical and emotional change no matter how hard it may be. Viewers first see loyalty between Rick and Sam when Ilsa abandons Rick at the train station. Sam is there for Rick; he helps him pick up the pieces, forcing him to move on with his life when Rick has no will power left.
