The year 1968 was a crucial year for the events that led up to it and the events it led to. Many significant events occurred, from wars and technological advances to civil rights movements and riots. Therefore, 1968 was the most chaotic year of the 20 th century. Adolf Hitler and the Nazis had been defeated and Europe slowly recovered from World War II throughout the 50’s and 60’s. However, during this period a war began to emerge between the Warsaw Pact and NATO. It was a long drawn out arms race in many technological and military fields, resulting in many scientific discoveries. This arms race marked the era known as the Cold War. The war was primarily fought by intelligence agencies such as the CIA (United States), KGB (Soviet Union), BND (West Germany) Stasi (East Germany), and MI6 (United Kingdom). Revolutionary advances were made in the field of nuclear weapons and rocketry including jet fighters, bombers, chemical weapons, biological weapons, anti-aircraft warfare, and electronic intelligence.
