In Christianity one topic that can be difficult to discuss is the Trinity. It’s a topic that’s very important to the Christian faith because it explains the deity of God. But it’s also one that can be difficult to explain to others. One reason that it can be difficult is because the word “Trinity” isn’t written in the Bible. That alone can be difficult to explain to someone who isn’t of faith. Here the goal of this research paper is to have a deeper understanding of the Trinity. By the end of the paper we want to be able to explainthe Trinity to anyone. As Peter says, “Always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Pet. 3:15 ESV) The Trinity is the very foundation of Christianity. Without some sort of understanding of it, our view of The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit would be skewed. Here’s how we’ll dig intothe Trinity. First we’re going to look at the how the Trinity only means one God. For someone who doesn’t know Christianity can easily see it meaning three gods. But here we’ll explain and defend that Trinity means only one God. Next we’ll dig into the three persons of the Trinity. Here we’ll distinguish the roles of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.Lastly we’ll look at the importance of the Trinity and the application it has for all Christians. In the end we want to have a better understanding of the Trinity and be able todefend our faith. The Trinity can be a hard topic to discuss due to its complexity. As we continue to read we’ll learn how to properly word on conversations in talking about the Trinity. The first topic that we’ll talk about is the Trinity meaning that there’s only one God and not three. This can easily get confusing because we see the Father, Son, and Spirit but implying only one God. To the outside reader they can easily say that this is a contradiction. Here we’ll show that God is truly one and the Trinity is not a contradiction.1
One thing to remember is that “Doctrine comes before ethics, confession before commandment.”1This means that before live by Gods commandments we must understand who God is. We can’t serve a God who we don’t know. How we serve God will flow from our understanding of the Triune God. Thomas Oden does a great job of describing the Trinity as one. He says“ - God as Father Almighty, the source of life, who makes Himself known in-Jesus Christ by the power of-the Spirit of God who is present throughout the historical process, working to transform it according to God’s purpose.”2Here we see that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit work in unity. The Spirit can’t work without the Son or the Son without the Father. All three working harmony with each otherand one cannot operate without the other. Biblically speaking one God in three persons is seen in scripture. The Bible “Advocates of this position either believe that the Father is the Son, and the Son is the Spirit, and the Spirit is the Father.”3
