Tajinder pal singh (TJ) psychology 101 Q1 – Discuss the contribution of structuralism and functionalism to the development of psychology as a science ? Ans. Structuralism was based on the notion that the task of psychology is to analyze consciousness into its basic element and investigate how these elements are related. Structuralists explored many question ,most of their work concerned sensation and perception in vision hearing and touch.to examine the contents of consciousness, the structuralists depend on the method on introspection. Structuralism emerged through the leardship of Edward titchener. Functionalism was based on the belief that psychology should investigate the function or purpose of consciousness, rather than its structure. Its chief architect was willam james. On the concern of both defination we can say structuralism and functionalism contributed to the development of psychology as a science.
