EC 315 Quantitative Research Methods Term Project Overview Getting Started The first step is to identify a model that describes the relationship between a dependent (or explained ) variable and four independent (or explanatory ) variables. Select a model related to your major, or something that you have a lot of interest in. If nothing immediately pops to mind, or you are having difficulty identifying a model with four independent variables, consider conducting an internet search based on the criteria “factors affecting _______” or “causes of ______”. Fill in the blank with an item of interest to you. This should start to stimulate some ideas. Keep a reference of where you found this information, you will need it for the “sez who” citations in your paper. Once you have an idea of a potential model, you will need to find sources of data. There are a number of government and other websites that provide boatloads of statistical data, a number of which are listed on page 8 of the textbook. Internet searches will also help you to readily identify data sources. Almanacs are another good source, and don’t forget your local library. You can use either time series or cross section data for your paper. You may find that you need to modify your initial model selection based on data availability. For example, if you had planed to use the number of registered Harley-Davidson motorcycles as one of your variables, but could only locate data on the number of all motorcycles registered, you could expand the scope of your analysis to include all motorcycles instead of only Harley- Davidsons. Once you have an idea of the model you'd like to use for your project, run it by me informally so
