1 Lecture 25 Herbal Recipe A copy of the fi rst edition (1597) of John Gerard’s famous herbal ( The Herball or Generall Historic of Plantes ) is in the Purdue Library (now in the manuscript case of the Pharmacy Library). In this copy there are 4 handwritten pages (in 2 different hands) found in the back of this book with various herbal recipes. These are in a “17th century handwriting” and the spelling is “peculiar” as is customary for this period. Three pages of this material have been duplicated, which contain the following prescriptions listed below. A line by line translation is also provided. 1.
