Jan Thomas MGT 3371 Lucas August 24, 2010 Chapter 5 The Six “Elements of Structure” are authority and responsibility, unity of command, span of control, centralization versus decentralization, departmentalization and work specialization. I also believe that this is how they should rank in order from most important to the least important. I believe that authority and responsibility is the most important because the employees need to know who to report too and what their duties are. This also allows things to run smoothly. I listed the next important element as being unity of command. This is so that each employee knows exactly who they report too. Only one person needs to be giving out orders if they want them to get accomplished. The next element is span of control. It is very important that chaos does not break out and that everyone understands their duties. This even goes to the managers. A helping hand is always a nice way to handle stress. The very last element that is important is specialization. Managers have the right to decide where to put people based on skill level. This is very important if you need a secretary and you have someone that can’t type. 1. A mechanistic or organic structure can definitely relate to an organization’s strategy. A mechanistic structure is very rigid and stable. It is full of regulations. There is a chain of command that is followed and formal hierarchy. An example of mechanistic structure is a hospital.
